ABOUT US

The New England Rain Barrel Company® was founded by Jack and Joan Freele. The Freeles lived in England for five years, where rain barrels were commonplace. When they returned to the United States, Joan wanted to take advantage of rain water to irrigate her gardens and flowers.

Jack, after long hours of research, created The New Englander rain barrel. It was such a good idea, The Freeles thought that maybe they had an idea to start a small business. Thus, the New England Rain Barrel Company® was born.

Jack has had a great business track record. He has been director of operations for two multi-million-dollar promotional products companies. His experience at these companies, makes the inner workings of The New England Rain Barrel Company that much more valuable.

One of the goals of The New England Rain Barrel Company® is to educate the public in water conservation, pollution and recycling through the use of an ages old idea -- the rain barrel. We are working with local cities, towns and watershed associations to help raise public awareness of water issues. We are professionals from other walks of life who are applying our marketing experience toward a very important cause.

Our original product is the New Englander Rain Barrel, made from recycled 55-gallon plastic drums. We clean them up, install hose fittings and an insect-proof inlet and put them out for distribution. The idea is that the homeowner places their rain barrel under the downspout from their roof to collect an incredible amount of rainwater that would otherwise run down the storm sewer and into, most often, a local pond. Then, when dry weather hits, they have plenty of water available for flowers, plants and vegetable gardens.

Since our inception in 2002, we have been asked countless times, "Is this where I get my composter?" and have been encouraged by many of the town coordinators with whom we work to offer a composter as a companion product. So, in our spare time, we did lots of research. After looking at lots of models and speaking with lots of manufacturers, we settled on the Bio-Orb®, made by Shape Products® in Menomonie, Wisconsin. They really do assemble in 10 minutes with no tools and are deceptively strong. An unassembled Bio-Orb® will fit in the back seat of a Hyundai Accent 4-door with ease, and Shape Products® backs up its workmanship with a 10-year warranty. The spherical design makes composting fun -- once a week, just roll Bio-Orb® around the yard to mix things up and accelerate the process. Like Joan says, "Feed your garden, not the landfill."

So as you can see, our company is helping conserve water, using recycled products, working to address pollution issues via first-flush catchment from the non-point roof source, and working with concerned organizations and citizens to highlight some critical problems that will surely become more severe as demand grows and supply dwindles.
